The food was out of this world. We've eaten in expensive London restaurants and the Green Man wipes the floor with some of them!
There are so many lovely ingredients in the dishes it was hard to know what to choose but we weren't disppointed.
The portions are just the right size and there was none of your usual frozen food so common in nice pubs.
The setting is very pretty and although the restaurant is quite traditional in design, the food was by no means boring!
The toilets are looking a little tired but the place is clean and the service very relaxed and friendly.
We will definitely be going back soon and have recommended the Green Man to all our friends!

Perfect sized portions, excellent home cooked food and very good service.

Could have been busier (and warmer) but was a cold night, pre Christmas and think just has been taken over. Will definitely be returning and telling friends. Very impressed. Well done and good luck.

The selection of foor was pretty good, pork, steak, pie, goats cheese tart etc. The veg and potato parts of the dishes was very tasty, hot and with very good portions. The steak, was large for an 8oz! (I'm sure it was bigger?). It was tasty, but it was a little tough.
Our main complaint was that we were left unattended for long periods, left with empty glasses etc for far too long. No water offered. Only two staff on duty and only 5 tables to wait on...where was the owner/manager?
The tables were too close and as the music was quiet, we could near everyone's conversations clearly...so not for a romantic night out. A pity, because the potential is enormous but has not been capitalised on.
Overall, enjoyed but will probably not return because of the service.

I have twice now dined at The Green Man, Chelmsford, Essex

Yes a Pub, but with a great difference when it comes to food and wine. The proprietors Nick and Sharon Thorogood, plus two daughters, really do have a family run establishment. In comparison to most south east Essex eateries, where Pub Grub consists of burnt ribeye and chips, this pub leaves them standing. For those who know The Bell at Horndon on the Hill or the Plough and Sail at Paglesham, the Green Man is in that category.

Nick knows his wines very well, he imports and distributes to other restaurants in the area. There is nothing I would call house plonk e.g. Outer Mongolian Merlot. Wine by the glass is provided from a choice of 20 different wines.

The location appears to be off the beaten track, but in fact it is right on Chelmsford's doorstep, close to Writtle just off the 414. A Georgian building with a nice duck pond. Weekends a reservation should be made, midweek not necessary. A relatively new ownership but the word is getting round.

I/We will be dashing back a.s.a.p.
