The food here was so tasty. I don't have the words to describe the layers of flavour I could taste in the food. May be it's because I'm a vegetarian and can really appreciate subtle tones of the starter and main... but my friend also agreed this was the best Indian she had been to in maldon . It's a pleasure to dine somewhere which has an emphasis on quality food.I was stuffed but still managed to eat it. Just gorgeous.

We have been back a few times and were always happy with the quality of the food.

Even when heaving on a Friday night, everyone makes way for you to get to the bar and you are served quickly and with style. The regulars offer a high standard of conversation and the breadth of clientèle is awesome. The food is not cheap but is varied and excellent. Pizzas from a Victorian oven, regular live entertainment, a huge array of real beers and lagers (just don't expect Stella or Fosters!) and a Landlord as mad as a box of frogs - what more could you ask for? Only gripe is you need to get there early to be assured of a seat.
One extra point: they have letting rooms so you don't need to travel far to your bed. The bedrooms have to be seen to be believed - very high standard, proper wooden doors with hand-forged nails.

If you like Italian Al La Carte food you cannot do better than this restaurant. The food is brilliantly presented, tastes amazing, is reasonably priced and the portions are of a good size which is very unusual for Al La Carte food.
We visited again last night and could not fault the food in any way; the whole experience was a culinary delight. Our friends with us last night have also visited Il Camino many times and say it is the one restaurant they will always recommend as the food is exquiste. Last night the Scallops in particular were fantastic and I have only tasted as good in a very expensive top London restaurant.
If you visit one restaurant in Maldon, Il Camino has to be the one. Everything is hand cooked by the Italian owner and the attention to detail is superb.
I was also impressed last Valentine's day at Il Camino as we were able to sample a wide range of food for a reasonable price. Even though it was one of the busiest days of the year the food was amazing and the whole restaurant decked out in red. Lovely :-)"

Between my boyfirend and I we had a half of each of the "Wibblers" brewery beer on tap, all of which tasted like half finished half brewed home-brew, which was a real shame. We had moved to the bar after our yummy meal and tried the beers one of the locals told me the miserable looking man at the end of the bar owned the brewery - so I approached him and asked him about the beer, saying also that I found the stout was a bit sour he just laughed in my face and slurred something about me being a woman which I presume was some kind of sexist remark! His demeanour clearly explained the uncomfortable atmosphere in the bar. A real let down after such a great meal and warm reception by the couple behind the bar - good luck to them, but we wont be returning!!

The restaurant was empty but it was early but didn't have that much ambience in its decor. Nonetheless, my Dad had rated the fish & chips from a previous visit so in we went. The starters were fine - we had the deep fried brie wedges (although it was a bit tepid) but tasted OK and the calamari which was fine. Two of us went for the haddock and chips which again were up to par. My mum plumped for the homemade steak pie and I went for the homemade moussaka on the special board.

The waitress asked if our food was OK before I'd even managed to pick up my knife and fork so I wasn't able to comment. However, within a mouthful I was certain that it was the most anaemic, lacklustre and unappetising moussaka that I've ever been served and this had been "recommended" to me by the waitress. If a moussaka like this was ever served within 10 miles of Greece, the cook would be exported. The meal had hardly any seasoning and none of the flavourings and sauces which you would ordinarily expect with moussaka ie. no tomato and no sauce whatsoever just an oily slick at the bottom of the dish. The only way to guess that it was indeed moussaka was for the token very thick chunks of aubergine on the top of the dish along with some equally thick unappetising slices of potato.

My mother's steak pie was equally disappointing as although there was plenty of meat inside the pie, it was completely void of any juices and the meat was dry and tasteless.

Both my mother and I left a good proportion of our meals and when the waitress returned, we commented that we had not been very happy with our meals - she simply said "oh" and walked off.

We declined a dessert and paid the bill and complimentary chocolates arrived with the change. A nice touch you would think but alas no. The quality of the chocolate was so cheap and nasty that it left a vile taste in your mouth.

As we were leaving the restaurant a woman (who I presume to be the manager/owner) cleared our glasses and asked if we'd enjoyed our meal. I reiterated our comments and all we got in response was, "We've sold loads of the steak pie today" and your mother had gravy with her meal didn't she?...." as if that makes the fact that the pie was dry OK. She didn't even comment on the moussaka. Her final comments were "oh well, it's always good to receive feedback".....unbelievable.

We will be going back to Heybridge Basin as we like it there but we will not be going back to the Jolly Sailor. It was a very disappointing end to a pleasurable day. My parents were upset with me for complaining about the meal as they find it embarrassing and you should just put up and shut up. I, on the other hand, do not agree with this philosophy and was extremely disappointed with the food, the attitude of the management and also with the mentality that just because they get a lot of tourists and bums on seats that they don't have to worry about repeat custom. The meal wasn't cheap for what you got and I certainly don't mind paying high prices for good restaurants and good service but the Jolly Sailor simply does not fall within this category. We will not be returning.

The 2 for 1 offer on was slightly confusingly explained but the food was what really counted. Fresh home cooked Italian by an Italian. A wide choice of starters and main but suprisingly not that many pasta dishes on the menu. Overall the food was excellent as well as the service. The toilets need up dating, particularly if it wants to compete with Intimo further up the road. Nice ambience. Would highly recommend for a special evening out with family and friends.

What a mistake!! It was a bad experience from the start. We ordered bread before our starter which did not arrive, then my starter had a pubic hair in it, the manager insisted it was a mushroom hair but even I know the difference. Our friend received chicken pasta when he ordered chicken and chips, my husbands special was certainly not fresh but also contained a long blond hair. Our female friend who is 5 months pregnant only realised her chicked was UNDERCOOKED when she was over halfway through as it was covered in sauce. When we expressed our concerns to the manager she proceeded to shout at us in front of all the other diners, accusing me of putting a hair in my own food (she must have decided it was not a mushroom hair after all), she then told our friend that she could be pretending she was pregnant and accused us of having no intention of paying for the meal. We said we were happy to pay for the drinks and 1 main meal which had nothing wrong with it, but she started screaming at us to get out whilst being physically removed by 2 male members of staff who continually appologised to us for what happened. This tells me that her behaviour was not uncommon and that she probably spoke to other customers in this way if they dared to complain about anything. My advise is stay well clear, this restaurant does not deserve your money, and no-one deserves to be treated in this way when all you've done is to go out to enjoy an evening with friends. What's more, undercooked chicken served to a pregnant lady could have had serious concequences.

Great fresh home cooked food with a very wide choice. All the deserts are made by the hostess (apart from the ice cream. Exceptionally clean toilets (has received an official 5/5 star rating. It has a great reputation, based on its current offering and its history - Prime Minister Edward Heath used to eat there, among many other luminaries. It went through a bit of low patch some years back the the new ownership has got it back on track. Burnham is about half an hour from Chelmsford and is a pretty waterfront town with lots of good pubs and great walks. I ate there a few months back - the pigeon starter was out of this world, and the main course, the Dover Sole, wad perfect. I skipped the dessert - for which I blame my brother (long story).

The whole ceiling was covered with red ballons, on the table there was a beautiful red rose and a little teddy bear. Before ordering we were presented with a complementary Kir Royale, olive and atipasto. The 7 choice set menu offered great variety of dishes which we found diffucult to choose from. The food was very well presented and cooked to perfection. The service was very attentive but not intrusive and we were allowed time to relax. We had a fantastic evening and we really enjoyed the food and the whole athmosphere. Sice then we visited the restaurant with friends on a couple of accasions and we always had good experience. We highly reccoment this restaurant and it will be always our first choice.

There was a good ambience with a full restaurant without it being over-crowded. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The food was to die for. The traditional turkey was on the menu (my husband had it & it looked delicious) but I wanted to try something different. I started with the Octopus, Chickpea & Rosemary Soup - the ingredients worked so well together & it was perfect for a cold wintery day. My husband's gran had the Deviled Quail - it was so tasty, I wished I had that too! For my main, I opted for the Roast Pheasant Breast which was stuffed with foie gras on klapshan & braised savoy cabbage - absolutely divine. For my dessert, I decided to carry on breaking tradition and had the Creme Brulee which was just perfect whilst my husband had the Homemade Christmas Pudding which he loved. To finish off, we had Mince Pies with coffee & tea. It was a fantastic Christmas meal. I am excited by the Contented Sole's menu and cannot wait to go back again to try everything else on the menu.

Our host and restaurant owner Maurizo was charming and the food was excellent. The menu which can be seen online on their website is very extensive. I did comment before visting the restaurant that if the food was as good as the menu we would be in for an evening of gastronomical delights and I was not wrong.
The food on offer was extremely well presented and exceptionally tasty. Ranging from wild boar and vension to a large variety seafood. The sauces were delicious and not too strong and made you want to lick the plate clean!
Overall this restaurant was a surprising find particularly in Maldon. It is an Italian restaurant with a difference; there is little pasta on the menu as the food comes from Maurizio's part of Italy which as he said is in the centre and little known. Recipes have been handed down over generations.
This is a restaurant which I would definitely recommend and we will definitely be bringing friends back to eat in Il Camino.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere was good too. When we went it was a mid week night, but it was still quite busy, so I imagine Friday and Saturday night it would be packed!

The food is traditional Italian, and there is no pizza, but this wasn't a problem as the choice of meats, fish and pasta for mains was excellent. I've been meaning to go back ever since, as the food was great. Overall it is quite expensive, but it's still good value and well worth it!

We were greeted on arrival by a gentleman (later introduced himself as the owner) and accompanied to our table. The restaurant was full and the atmosphere was very good. We all felt relaxed and at ease with the place. We were presented with the menu by a lovely and helpful waitress. Although (thankfully) there where only 2 or 3 pasta dishes, the menu offered an excellent variety of meat and fish dishes as well as new combinations we had never seen before. After a very helpful advice from the waitress, we finally managed to order. The food arrived in good time, was very well served, generous and the presentation very good (hot plates). The owner advice on the wine was just right and it complemented our dishes very well. We all had a great evening and we will certainly recommend it to our friends. We will be back!
