I did think that the food was what I would describe only as 'OK'and nothing to write home about. I have to agree with a previous reviewer that the toilets were not up to scratch which again is poor given the lack of customers at this time of the year and the place appeared fully staffed. I have been here a few times in the past prior to the theatre and it has gone down in its overall standards which is a shame. Looking at the website I wondered if the owner has expanded too soon and maybe in areas out of his league? Either was my girlfriend was not impressed and like many we wont be in a hurry to go again soon.

I really wish she hadn't, and I have since forgiven her! I will tell you why this pub should be given a wide berth. The drinks prices are astounding! I really was gob smacked and immediately insisted on going to another establishment, but as she was paying, she insisted we stay. I decided to only have a pot of tea as it was so expensive. When the food came, I felt I was being served up the food of my childhood. Colourless over boiled vegetables, bland and tasteless food with absolutely no care or consideration as to how it was put on the chipped plate! When we were asked how our meal was, I said it was very lack lustre and flavourless and noted the waiter saying something to a lady with red hair behind the bar who shot us a rather unsavoury look. I felt the staff did not care one bit about our custom except payment and did not care about our dining experience at all. Clearly they do not offer one.
I read the reviews on this website and agree with the person who says that it is quite clear the people giving the reviews with top marks all the time are clearly written by the staff of this establishment. They must be, unless they are turning up on the only days in the year when the food and service are astoundingly perfect!

It wasn't terribly busy, but the wait for food was REDICULOUS. The waiter kept getting everything wrong and did not know what he was doing. The food was mediocre, veg absolutely disgusting, drinks prices must be paid for by taking out a re-mortgage. But to top all of THAT off, we witnessed the landlady BERATING and SHOUTING at customers!! She called them rude, and some other things I care not to mention. I have never EVER witnessed such appalling behaviour by the owner of an establishment and the atmosphere went right down, it was horribly embarrassing. After visitng this 'place' I have made a point of reading EVERY review there is available about the Crown and I am absolutely amased that this place is still open for business. The only reason it is, is because of passing trade, a few loyal locals and the views, which really aren't anything special at all! I also feel that a great many of the 'good' reviews are quite obviously written by locals or staff or even the repulsive and rude landlady herself as they score 10/10 for themselves for everything, and the 'reviews' read more like advertisements... (wake up review sites!!!)
You have to be totally bonkers to visit or even freqent this place and associate yourself with such a rude woman who treats her customers like RUBBISH and surely gives her town a bad name and must be well-known for it. Shame on you. The staff must be so embarrassed as well. I feel very sorry for them and the poor customers.

Interesting. There are two menus and two sets of customers here. The Manager told us the Chinese like to sit on their own but we felt excluded on a table for two in the furthest corner. The shared starter was greasy and poor. The crispy duck seriously inedible and we sent it back. We were informed this was traditional. Maybe so but also inedible. The mains were tasty but massive portions. This is OK if you have a table of 4 or 6 students to share a couple of plates but we ended up with way too much food and a £75 bill for two (the duck wasn't charged). We asked to take away the leftovers for the next two days meals and were presented with a stack of boxes to fill ourselves... The Chinese students like to do it themselves we were told. If you are a Chinese student that is happy to share with 5 friends you will have a great time. The rest of you will experience an overpriced cafe with a few stand out dishes but mostly Chinese cafe food (and not in a good way!). AH

The Peldon Rose is absolutely gorgeous and the food is fabulous. I took my mum and tow friends here for my mum's 65th birthday and we all thought it was great. The steak was perfect and enourmous and so were to side orders. The best bit was the baked mackerel with beetroot salad! so simple and yet too delicious for words. The only down side was that there was nothing for chocoholics on the pudding menu. The restaurant manager was fun and very good at making diners feel important without hovering over you for the entire meal which I hate. We will definately return for more! The bill came to £130 for four people having two courses plus wine which was great value.

About our service. We arrived and ordered our meal, the service was excellent and came with a pleasent smile. The staff were helpfull when questions were asked aabout the menu. The food was served quickly and the whole experience was great. I would recomend the coast inn to anybody, and we have since eaten there several times. Although you do need to book early on weekends especially in the summer months as the place is extremely popular. No suprise there.

The wine was warm when if arrived, they kindly changed this with apologies. The starter was advertised as retro prawn cocktail. Perhaps by retro they mean the tired poor quality prawns has been in the fridge since the 1980s. The main Arrived and the presentation was excellent it's a shame the frozen and precooked cod wouldn't have been welcome at captain Birdseyes table. The orange coloured green curry impressed nobody but the kitchen hand who had obviously been picked every ounce of meat from the chicken thighs and legs to fill the meat content. We waited for 20 mins for being asked if we would like dessert before giving up and going to the till to ask for the bill. Worst meal I have had in years. Service was good when you seen someone. Try KFC or even burger king instead their food is fresher.

My companion could not eat the breakfast I'm afraid as it was just too greasy. The staff are not warm at all and it all just seemed too much effort for them. I really enjoyed my tour of the area and would definitely come to Manningtree and Mistley again to explore the area further, but will decidedly give this establishment a miss and find somewhere more welcoming. The best and only positive point of this establishment that I can proffer is the views and location only. The Dedham Vale is most spectacular.

Shiny cutlery and glassware, amazing table decorations and perfect background music.

We were given our own dining room, and I was even given the vegetarian menu (specified at booking - but not requested). The wine was delightfully chilled and the food cooked to perfection. We were looked after and given the attention we needed (not overbearing but highly attentive).

It will most certainly become a special little place in our hearts for those romantic and special evenings. An absolutely wonderfully quaint place to visit for a special evening.

The service was non existent. We sat for 30 mins, no one approached us for drinks etc. We served ourselves. I had to ask for the order to be taken. The food was very bland. I had two lamb chops, they were very small indeed and cooked in a sauce that was very uninspiring. I literally could have bought a sauce and cooked it at home. That's not good when you are paying thirteen pounds for the privilege. At the end of the evening when the waiter asked if everything was OK, I replied it was average. The waiter looked surprised and eventhough I politely pointed out my opinion, he seemed to want to argue about it. The people on the next table agreed that they had had a similar experience. This was last Friday night and a special occassion. We used to go there fairly regularly...not anymore.

The cod was fresh and the chips were obviously from fresh potatoes, although the peas and carrots were slightly over cooked.
I attended a business lunch last week and requested a table move due to some very loud and inconsiderate people beside us. The Manager did this reluctantly but we all noticed that after this we were pretty much ignored. He must have been having a bad day but no respect for customer service or satisfaction I have to say! The food was nothing special I have to say and due to this reception we will not be rushing back. Overall unimpressed - plenty of competition in Colchester for establishments that want to fight to stay trading. JB

I had a bento box. The food was awful, swimming in burnt oil. The miso soup smelled so badly that I didn't even taste it. I asked my friends to smell it for fun. Few hours later I got a good stomach ache and threw up. The worst "Japanese" food I've ever tasted. And expensive!

We were given a lovley place to sit, upstairs on a balcony, overlooking the rest of the restauarant. The venue is very sweet and beautifuly decorated.
The service was spot on. The second we had all sat down, out came the starters and each course followed promptly after. We had pre ordered and everyone got exactly what they'd asked for, even with the extra twists we had requested. These guys are very well organised and very friendly. The food was absolutely gorgeous. Would recommend to anyone both for a large party or just an intimate few. Will definately go again!

Its intimate atmosphere in a contempory setting, within minutes walk from the town centre makes this a must-do venue for locals and visitors alike. The food is simple and beautifully presented, but it is the taste that is the real high point of any dish on the menue. Well seasoned, perfectly cooked, fresh and clean tasting food, served with a flask of hot saki, the food is not to be missed. food arrives very quickly according to cooking times as opposed to the traditional "starter followed by main", don't be tempted to order more than one main and one side per person. These are generous and filling portions, which satisfy on both flavour and appetite. You are served by friendly, helpful and knowledgable staff, with the owner, Ting, keeping a close eye on attention to detail, ensuring that his pride in having the best place to eat is not misplaced. Easily the very best place to eat in Colchester, fantasic food, great service, I will come back time and time again, as i have since the very first night nearly ten years ago. highly recommended.

The barn itself is a beautiful interior and creates a nice and interesting atmosphere. During the times I have eaten there, there has been a steady flow of diners, which was fortunate as the space is quite large and I can imagine if there were not many people dining, it could feel a bit empty. We have always been seated in the central area and I prefer this to the sides as it is light and not draughty.

The food I have eaten was very nice. Portion sizes were moderate; I could imaagine that they may not be big enough for some people, but were fine for a lunch. Taste-wise, I really liked the field mushroom served with stilton and salad. The dressing on the salad was good (not too acidic) and the field mushroom/cheese combination proved very pleasant. I agree with the other poster who commented about the lack of bread as I do think the addition of a basket of bread or a roll each would have been a nice complement to the starter. I have had the salmon fillet and it was reasonable in size and tasted nice, but was not overly adventurous - I could have easily cooked it myself. I agree that I would not be overly happy to pay for the addition of side dishes, so the lunch time menu suits me as the meals I have selected came as a whole with vegetables/carbs included. Desserts are really delicious - definitely worth paying for if you have room. Also, the coffee served was a nice blend, which I have not always found to be the case in other restaurants.

The toilets are decorated in a pleasant fashion and are clean. Parking is very good as there are plenty of spaces to choose from. I think in terms of value for money, the set menu I have eaten from is good. I will definitely eat at The Barn again in the future.

High proportion low cost, poor quality frozen goods such as apple pies. meat top quality, locally sourced. poor hygeine methods in kitchen, food often served to customers after having been on the floor.

food sampled on visit one- sirloin steak. steak slightly overcooked. came with chips, onion rings, mushrooms, tomato and peas and carrots. The peas and carrots very overcooked, with no taste or nutrition in them. 6/10

food sampled visit two- cottage 'pie'. shepherds pie served with choice of new potatoes or chips and veg. Vegetables cooked as above. Pie had an overwhelming flavour of Worcester sauce and had virtually no peas, carrots or onion in it. The mash was nice, with melted grilled cheese on the top. 4/10

service - there are some good staff at the Crown. However, several of them have been there for donkeys years and are very surly and disatisfied, and can be downright rude, unhelpful and unfriendly. You would not go to the Crown for good service. The landlady can be very friendly, especially to locals, but should a complaint arise, her customer service skills are non-existent. All staff could benefit from customer service training, to make this establishment more successful.

ambience - on a busy night, the ambience can be very good. there is often live music, usually of a cabaret type

value - bearing in mind the comments this professional secret shopper has made regarding the food and service, it is felt that the standard of food recieved and lack of good customer service is reason to believe that it is of at least average value for money. Drinks are markedly more expensive here than in other pubs in the town.

toilets - the toilets are in generally good state of repair and kept clean and tidy.

This establishment would not be considered for recommendation.

We were on our way to Flatford and found the Crown at Manningtree after looking for somewhere for lunch. The Sunday roast was excellent, three courses for £9.95. Food cooked to perfection and served hot. All service was done with a smile, nothing seemed to much trouble. The Crown was busy and we were warned there was a wait for food, but it really wasn't that long. Once we had a drink and sat chatting the time went quite quickly. We would have liked to sit outside for lunch but there were only backless benches available for seating. We sat in the Haven room that didn't have many people inside, so I have marked the ambience down a bit for that reason. Would recommend the Crown, though. Will certainly go back when we're next in the area.

No matter how quiet or busy it is the waitresses are cold, unfriendly and inattentive. A great shame as Sloppy Joes could be a great place with better service and cheaper food, but with the abundance of restaurants in Colchester I'd say go elsewhere.

As we waited, another returned a serving of mussels.
Whitebait were adequate, but clearly straight out of a packet, with strange breadcrumby exterior and not freshly prepared. Mersea is a fishing harbour, and the 2 seafood restaurants (sadly closed in evening mid-week)have spanking fresh produce.
My partner had mussels which smelt and tasted very poky, somehow they had lost all the fluid which should be part of the experience. I had barely competently cooked mushroom stuffed with stilton, which was a messy plate with hurled on salad. The place seemed to be completely staffed by teenagers; pleasant but not professional. All very amateurish.

The food is ok but totally overpriced for what it is and saturated in oil. For a good, value for money meal I would recommend Frankie and Benny's or Table Table a million times over Sloppy Joe's!

Not impressed with The Lemon Tree, its food or its service. My friend and I called in after work for a quick bite before heading to the cinema. It was not busy but we were kept waiting for sometime before out starter arrived and then when we asked for a break before the main course (so we could have a cigarette)all we got was fluttering eyelashes and sighs from the staff. We found to food to be of average quality but potentially very swiftly cooked and subsequently a little cold in places. The prices certainly DO NOT reflect the type of food we ordered, the current economic climate or anything that consititutes value in anyway! We loved the ladies it smelt nice and the soap was decent. However overall we were unimpressed and wont be heading there again whilst there are more value for money or even fast food outlets in the area.

Had to update you as we took my parents back to the Coast Inn for Fathers day a couple of weeks ago. What a totally different impression and expereince we got! We had the Sunday Roast - 3 out of 4 ordered the roast beef which when it arrived was raw - not red - raw! We were told that there were no medium cooked roast beef's so 2 of the group ordered the pork instead and the other person fought on with the blood and cold meat! When the pork arrived we realised why they had served it with steak knives! Have you ever had tough pork that needs a steak knife? Me neither! Anyhow we did make it clear that we were unhappy. We were kept waiting for sometime after our arrvial and it was not that busy considering it was fathers day. Overall this was a totally different experience to our first and just shows you how within a year a place can go from success to disaster - The world is a competitive place Coast Inn so SORT IT OUT IF YOU WANT TO SURVIVE>>>!!

My main meal was a steak which I sent back a total of 3 times and it was still not cooked to my requests! This is a basic expectation when I visit a restaurant sorry! My poor father disliked his starter and main and found something in his veg that it was not possible to even discrib let alone put a name on! I would say not too hot on the hygiene stakes and lacking overall in customer service and how to be friendly. We wont be going again sadly.

We pre-booked the set menu and were all looking foward to good evening, good catch up and good food. I got: Good catch up and to be fair, a fairly good evening, however this was not as a result of either service and certainly not the food!! Whilst I am not a chef, I am equally not stupid. Having ordered the field mushroom with stilton to start, one can only assume that the `field` used was similar to the shoe box garden I had made at pre-school as the size of the single mushroom clearly reflected this, as did the single cherry tomato on the side. The salmon I ordered as a main course equally reminded of me of childhood, when I had been served a single fish finger, not the adult sized portion of salmon fillet one had expected. Being charged additionally for vegetables, that at the very least should be served on the same pretentionasly large plate was beyond belief, although having already experienced an appauling lack of basic bread to accompany the first course, one should have expected nothing less!! The woman serving, who clearly felt that we were an inconvenience to her first post Easter evening, despite being one of only 3 tables, struggled to remember the even the size glass of wine ordered, it was the only glass of wine our table ordered. The waitresses that `supported` her where, well, quite frankly word me. Needless to say, when I got home, having really enjoyed a good catch-up with former colleagues, reached for the toaster and microwave...

Nice place and a good menu that has a variety of different dishes. It's the closest thing Colchester has to a Wagamammas. Staff are always friendly, you can see the chefs cooking so you know the kitchen is clean. I've had a few meals at Fai's and it's always been to the same high standard. Well worth a visit.

My main meal had a hair in it and my father was very sick when he got home and we wonder just how clean this establishment really is?? The toliets were also of a poor standard - they always say you can judge a place by its toilets and kitchens!

Not sure if this is one for another visit - only from environmental health!! Sorry LT but you have many lessons to learn as yet!

The Jazz menu was very expensive(£23 for only 2 courses)and we all generally thought that the food was badly presented and of a poor quality. This is suprising given the high status of the owner and his apparent committment to the food industry - we never saw any committment!

We arrived at about 9pm and were seated quickly but from that point on everything was just done too fast. One of my party ordered the salmon which was cold when it came out - nothing worse than cold fish! We also found the prices of the wine and beers to be very high and this is clearly where the money is made.

If you want a good value, quality driven and professioanlly served and attended meal DO NOT go to The Lemon Tree.

Watch out for your high heels on the highly polished floor as you come in and settle down to a feast with wines to match. You can hardly imagine this is part of a chain, the food is freshly prepared and reading the menu leaves you too many choices. We settled on the Filetto di manzo al pepe verde and Pollo con Funghi, though ended up eating each other's food, it was so appealing! Puds are just as scrummy especially with a glass of dessert wine. Fab place and we noticed that kids dining there were looked after well, unlike other restaurants in the area. Highly recommended.

I took my husband this December to celebrate his birthday and found it to be basic 'pub grub' and not that good either. We ended up having fish and chips, not what I'd had in mind!Shows it self to be almost a la carte but way off the mark.

OK, hit up Ashiana and Indian lovers are in for a real treat. The owners had a long established restaurant just a stones throw away and that was always my favourite Indian in the town. They moved as the previous premesis is earmarked for redevelopment (although it's still trading as an Indian...go figure!).
The decore is "lets try to look trendy on the cheap". More Ikea than Conran but adequate.
The main draw is the food and you just cant fault it. The portions, especially the take-aways are generous and good value. The staff are always friendly and ready to help.
When I get a take away with the family they always give me some complimentary extras for free (as they do everyone I'm sure) the gullible wife thinks it's because they like us, bless her!
Very busy as you would expect at the weekends so book, highly recommended, best Indian food in Colchester.

We found the food very average and the chicken wraps that we had were quite oily and without much flavour. I then remembered why I hadn't been for so many years. I hadn't been impressed the first time either.
