This was a tired looking piece of paper with very little choice for a Saturday night dinner. Anyway we were prepared to make the best of it. I had garlic mushrooms on toast, my husband had whitebait. The mushrooms and sauce was OK though the toast was a little too crispy (I had to be very careful cutting into it, worried about it going across the table). My husbands whitebait had a chemical after taste which was not enjoyable. However the main course was better, I had risotto (which I enjoyed), and my husband had liver with bubble and squeak (which was mostly made up of carrots). We decided to have a pudding (which unfortunately was a mistake). We both chose plum crumble and custard. I couldn't finish mine. It was far too sweet and I think maybe it was heated up far too much and the crumble seemed to melt. I have now been to the Headley about 4 times in 2 years and it has varied.
Our last visit was last week - August 4th 2010 for a friends birthday - and it was FANTASTIC!!!
I had seen recently banners saying under new management and the signs had all changed to say that it was now The Headley steak house, so thought why not - we like steak!
Well we were not disappointed, they have new menus, simpler and not so fussy.
The prices have been lowered considerably - and yet the food is better! We were welcomed as soon as we arrived, and asked if we would like to sit straight down or have a drink at the bar first, we opted to sit straight down, our drinks order was taken there and then and within a couple of minutes we had our drinks, the menu is on the place mat on the table, so we didnt' wait anytime at all to read it and shortly followed someone took our order - all in all, everything was done at a nice pace, not rushed and not left waiting
I had a traditional prawn cocktail for starter and it was fantastic to not see frozen prawns or ridculous amounts of sauce - it was just right event with brown bread as it is suppose to, my partner had the tempura prawns which he raved about and if he thought he could get a way with ordering another lot of he would, a friend had the chicken wings and also really enjoyed them.
Main course was just as great - i had a steak which I ordered with the Blue cheese sauce, cooked medium rare - and do you know what theat is exactly what I got, with a lovely addition of some grilled tomatoes and very tasty mushrooms!! My partner had the burger which he loved, he said that it was the first home made burger he had come across in ages that was all in proportion to its self, the bun, the patty and the salad all sat nicely together all being the same size, nothing looking like it had shrunk! I can only remember what one of our friends had and that was the chicken which he said was tasy, not dry and all round very pleasant. We order sides to go between us all and the onion rings were delicious and perfectly crunchy - and the celeriac coleslaw yum!!

We didn't have dessert but that was because we had all cleared our plates and I could not think about eating another thing!!
Ther service continued to be good for the rest of our people, we were left alone enough to enhoy our evening and talk, but we also not ignored when we wanted more drinks etc.

Overall a really GOOD meal and the price was so reasonable.

This also do Roast Beef on a Sunday - so I think I am going to have to return for that!!

We've long been fans of Grahams on the Green, and our lunch on Wednesday was exceptionally good. Some of the best scallops I've ever tasted and an excellent pork belly. I'll be going again there tomorrow to offer this place support as a new restaurant.

Arrived 8:30 - No record we were coming. Was told no problem our table would be 20mins. Asked to wait in sitting area (pleasant). During the next 45mins we noticed a lack of food being brought to tables and a number of guests walking over and speaking to the manger asking where the food was. I asked the manager what the problem was. He apologised for "forgetting us" and said he had a table of 24 turn up early. I was assured that the delay would be about 20mins. We were shown to a table (surrounded by a lot of other tables with people minus food) and the drink order was taken. Eventually a waitress turned up and asked to take the order. After a gentle reminder that drinks had been ordered and bread etc had not turned up we ordered (9:45). We were promised food would be 20mins. After 10 mins the manager came over and said we had not ordered a starter and that this would cause a delay of (you guessed) 20mins for the delivery of the main meal. By this time hysterical laughter was unavoidable. The tables around were in no better state and the Birthday party of around 15 seemed to be less than overjoyed. At around 10:30 the main meal turned up. Mediocre is a fair description. Famished we devoured the food ( well the chance of getting another table at another restaurant at 10:30 on a Saturday night is - small). The food was cleared away and we requested the desert menu (yes we were still laughing). I asked the manager what would take a long time to arrive and what would not. The eventual identification of 4 or 5 offerings that would only take (yep the stock 20mins came out again) was too much. I requested the bill deciding that this was a truly lost cause. The arrival of two glasses of Champagne (Can't vouch for that description) and the associated taste just convinced us that a speedy retreat was called for. I went to pay, meeting the drinks we had ordered previously sitting on the bar. I was assured by the manager that "it was not usually like this". I replied that I was sure it was not, because if it was they would be out of business in a week. The staff looked dejected. Their ability to apologies apparently fully exhausted. I suppose I should mention the food I saw sent back by other diners and the comments from others that they would have sent it back but hunger was the bigger problem. Two hours fifteen minutes to serve one course of food. Not acceptable. I don't plan to re-visit this restaurant any time soon. We did check for hidden cameras in case it was a set up. It wasn't a set-up. It was Fawlty Tower reborn in Brentwood.

Food and drinks menu is varied. From beer battered cod to pasta, pies and burgers there is a good menu on offer.
Ambience has always been good, no rock music blaring out, normally soft room music like Frank Sinatra which fits the atmosphere of the restaurant well.
Lots of parking spaces.
We have never had any complaints when coming to this restaurant. Friendly staff, great food, good atmosphere. We enjoy it. ! It has a large car park which was completely full yesterday lunch time, but I can certainly see why, it is absolutely breathtaking inside. I cannot recall the last time I went to a restaurant that looked so old but still so well maintained. The Tudors has had 2 AA Rosettes for as long as I can remember, the food and the service were without fault. We went for the set price lunch menu which included some of the best Crab Cakes I have ever tasted, served with Pumpkin Salsa. The main course of Lamb Shank was cooked well, but paired with an olive sauce that was ok, it just did not blow me away. The wine waiter was able to recommend a delicious Rioja to accompany the Lamb - which was amazing, I wish I had remembered to ask the name of it! All served with individual portions of fresh vegetables at no extra charge. Dessert of Apple Tarte Tatin was another absolute winner, delicious.
My guest and I were then led through to the lounge to sit in front of a real log fire where we were served coffee in comfortable armchairs. Apparently I could then have ordered from their Whisky Trolley!!!!

We were all most impressed with the quality of our meals and could not fault any of it. The service was attentive, slick and not over the top. I would certainly like to revisit on an evening and would hope that the standards remain as high as our lunchtime experience. Good:
-Waiting staff are very helpful, polite and very well trained.
- Food is great, although not plentiful, restrained but tasty.
- Quite busy with business people and locals combined, nice ambience.
- We went with a group with prams and they had made a very good effort to ensure we had enough room - although they were pre-warned.
- Very good value.

Bad:
- Overpriced champagne by the glass (flat and old, we should have complained) but by the bottle is reasonable.
- Front of house staff were rude and unhelpful. Disappointing as the waiting staff were so accommodating.
- No baby changing facilities, but this may be because we couldn't find the disabled toilets. The toilets were, however, very clean and luxurious!

Would I go again? I like that you can pay as you drink so that they are not continuously topping up your glass without you looking like other restaurants.

The service was very good and very quick considering it was so busy and that there were so many of us. We were not rushed and were given plenty of food with lots to choose from!

Id recommend it to anyone although the location is a bit difficult and it is very dark you would definately have to get a cab even if you live close by as you cant walk down the pitch black lanes!

We always have amazing food and we've never had a bad experience!...the staff are always friendly and very helpful!

I think both venues are excellent and the service is friendly but not intrusive. Everyone is on the ball and the food is extremely well cooked and attractively presented. The decor is modern and very comfortable. It has the really cosy feel of a good old fashioned English pub and yet surprises you with exquisite and sumptuous dining, well worth a visit. When we arrived at about 8.30pm on a tuesday night we were the only customers in the pub. We were able to enjoy ourselves as a family, but felt a little lonely, there wasn't really any ambience at all. Everybody in the party was pretty satisfied with their food, and with the affordable prices it is a good place to go for a decent meal.
