Found this pub when out for a cycle ride and thought it looked like a good place to eat, to our cost we tried it.
The first impression when entering the bar was good, we hadn't booked as it was on a Wednesday but was offered a choice of tables, so far so good.
We decided to have a starter and ordered bread and olives and prawn cocktail, the olives were plentiful but the bread was supermarket cooked from frozen, the cocktail was mediocre.
For the main course we both ordered, what was described as home cooked steak and kidney pie, this proved to be slop in a bowl with a puff on top. To be fair the veg were cooked okay, but for the price charged it should all have been.
We eat out at least twice a week, but will never return to this pub.
Only pleased we didn't take guests.

Extremely disappointing
My grandparents had been to this pub a couple of times before for lunch and then decided to take some other family members, a party of 7 there for an evening meal. On the same night there happened to be a function in the marque and a lot of extremely drunk people were stumbling through the pub. They were placed on a table that was right by the door and continually had people stumbling back and forward, opening and closing the door going to and from the bar. During their meal a drunk lady from the function stopped and started talking to the table and a party member ask if they could not pass through quite so frequently. The women left but then came back minutes later and started a full blown argument directed at my grandmother who is in her 70s. Her friends just stood by and watched, even though other members of the table intervened and asked her friends to please take her away. Finally a male from the function eventually took her away but their evening was already ruined. They asked to speak to the manager who came over and was less than sympathetic to the situation and had the attitude that he really didn't care and the last function they had there ended early. He finally said to pay for what they felt was appropriate. If they would have known there was a function on the same night my grandparents would not have booked a table there! If i had been with my grandparents that night i would of got up and just left without paying. I certainly would never recommend this place after what happened to my grandparents and think its appalling what happened to them. They also said the food was only average! So if you do think of going here make sure yo ask if there is a function on as they don't bother to tell you and potentially be prepared for confrontation with drunk people if you do!!!

Staff very friendly, ambience warm and cosy, but food disapointing and costly. The salad I ordered was swimming in sauce, complained but charged the full price £9.95.even though sent back only half eaten.

A quaint small country pub near Woodham Mortimer. 4 adults and 2 young children had a Saturday lunch. Busy as it was Valentine's weekend but nice quiet ambient atmosphere. Extensive menu choice. Catered for the kids off the a la Carte menu. Very friendly service. Haven't been here for over 15 years. Long overdue. Look forward to returning to the beer garden and play area for the kids on a nice summer's day. Would recommend it.
