The Windmill stands in the centre of the pretty village of East Hanningfield. Built towards the end of the 17th century, the pub has remained popular for both locals and visitors alike, ever since.

You will always receive a warm welcome and enjoy 'traditional' hospitality - its how it was when the 'Coach & Four' pulled up and what happens to this day, it's part of what we do at The Windmill...

We look forward to seeing you soon.

At the Bar:

You can enjoy all the well-known brand name beers and lagers along with a choice of 'real ales' such as Greene King IPA & Crouch Vale Brewers Gold.

We also stock a variety of wines and a selection of soft drinks for the designated driver or we can arrange transport for you with a local taxi firm, that way you can then enjoy yourself 'fully'!

We offer a traditional menu, using fresh produce prepared on the premises by our in house Chefs. Haddock, Cod, Salmon are all delivered from the markets daily. In addition to this the majority of our vegetables and salad is home-grown. This is part of our commitment to quality, 'food miles' and support for our local producers.

We offer a traditional Sunday Lunch Menu Roast Beef, Lamb, Chicken, Plus Starters, Homemade Desserts and our range of Fish available throughout the day.

"Good honest fare" is what we promise and what we deliver.

If you are looking for a restaurant that conveys excellent food, first-class service and a warm and welcoming atmosphere then you need to look no further than the completely revamped "The Folly Bistro" in the Windmill Tavern in East Hanningfield. Don't get this confused with the Old Windmill in South Hanningfield as they are two completely different places.

The Folly Bistro is the sister restaurant to the Fox and Goose/Bakehouse near Highwood, just outside of Chelmsford, where we have also eaten and which has an excellent reputation. What they have managed to transport, to The Folly Bistro, is exactly the spirit and character of the Fox and Goose and overlaid it with a more intimate restaurant making it a first-class experience.

Everything about the place has been meticulously planned and Danielle, the owner of these restaurants, conveys a calmness and, attention to detail, which would make you think that The Folly has been open under its new guise for years. In fact we visited on the second day of opening and I have to say that I was surprised to see that the place was virtually full by 7.30 and everyone knew their job.

The food needs a special mention as the chef, who previously worked at the Fox and Goose has taken everything good about that place, added his own uncomplicated twist, and is serving up food which quite frankly is excellent. He is supported by staff, some of which have come from the Fox and Goose and the whole team is clearly working with one aim in mind and that is to be the best.

On this showing they are already there and of course the trick now is to make sure that they do not get complacent and keep providing the food and service that people wish to pay for. I mention this only because I enjoyed going so much and, it is closer than the Fox and Goose that I want to be able to enjoy the experience as much as I did on our first visit.

James, the chef and Danielle the owner, have done a great job and I did not believe that they would be able to recreate and better the experience of the Fox and Goose as quickly as they have. Well done to you all and the excellent staff which support you. You can rest assured that we will be back and will be delighted to spread the word on what you have achieved.

The Windmill is now firmly established as our 'local' even if it is ten mins drive away.
The food is fresh, cooked well and nothing is too much trouble for the attentive staff who are friendly and helpful.
Thoroughly recommend you try it, sure if you do, you'll want to go back again.
