Not as good as it should've been

Baumann's Brasserie Coggeshall Essex

Have been to Baumann's a few times over the years and really had an enjoyable experience - excellent food, wine and service. My last visit however has put me off ever returning:
The restaurant was half empty but all guests were packed into the front section of the restaurant with very little room and near enough for fellow diners to over hear conversations.
Unimaginative selection of food on the menu.
Main dishes had to be sent back to the kitchen because they were either cold or not cooked to the requested specification.
Service was very slow - so much so that we didn't stay for coffee - and waiting staff were unattentive.

La Piazza Braintree Essex

moved to braintree about a year ago - one of the reasons was because of this restaurant. The food is amazing, with friendly efficient service. Very popular in the evenings. It is a family run restaurant, the owner/ chef cooks everything fresh to order, evening going up to London to buy fresh fish from Billinsgate. I can not recommend this restaurant enough, we eat here at least once a month and I have never been disappointed.

Not great

The Green Dragon Youngs End Essex

We used to go here when visiting family in the area so we decided to try it with a group of 15. The decor an atmosphere were OK and the staff generally friendly but the food and price were not good. My starter cost £5 and consisted of half a piece of bacon a very small chopped field mushroom and a tiny tasteless poached egg. My main was desribed as lamb shank with braised vegetables and so the sliced half a carrot was a bit of a let down. The lamb was OK. The custard served with the desserts was thinner than any I 've ever seen and the cold desserts seem to take longer to arrive than the hot food which seemed rather odd. Overall a very disappointing experience that we will not be repeating.

The Green Dragon, Youngs End, Braintree

The Green Dragon Youngs End Essex

The ambience at the Green Dragon is fine and it has a cosy feel to it. Consequently, that initial feeling promises something good. Sadly, it didn't deliver at all on the critical element - the dining experience, when we went for lunch.

Now, I don't like to be rushed by a restaurant but the service, despite the place being all but empty (not a good sign at a weekend?), was extremely slow; albeit quite friendly.

When the food was served up, portions and offerings overall were less than generous, especially when you consider the price. I have eaten much better food for far less at an equivalent competitor pub/restaurant nearby. The food itself was broadly ok but nothing special though one of our party disliked the salmon which was served up with a somewhat slimy skin. None of this was helped by a pretty costly experience given the quality of food and service.

So not a recommendation and we won't be going back. All in all I'd recommend you avoid.

Lunch at Timbers, Blake End

Timbers Restaurant Blake End Essex

We were visiting Blake End today, 22nd Feb 2009, at lunch time and decided to stop for lunch at Timbers. We hadn't booked but they were able to seat us. It was very busy so booking is recommended.

The food was good (scampi x 2 and roast beef x 1, plus puddings), plenty of it and very reasonably priced (about £15 per head for 2 courses and a drink each). Nice atmosphere; service was good and friendly. Would we go again? Definitely.

We didn't try the toilets in the restaurant, however the toilets in the main craft block (which we have scored) were OK but messy but I guess this is down to those who had visited earlier.

Baumann's Brasserie Coggeshall Essex

I have eaten in some of the best restaurants in London, including Mr Langan's famous one in Mayfair. They were in the 80's and early 90's at other people's expense. In more moderate time, at my own expense, I choose pub gastro types I believe they are called. I am pleased that we decided to push the boat out a yesterday. This restaurant rates with any I have eaten in. The food and service is suberb and very affordable. We will be back.

Tutti Grille Braintree Essex

If like me you're really into Italian food then you will love Tutti's. Even if you're not, its still worth going because there is such a wide variety of dishes and bound to be something that will appeal to you. I have been there on several occasions and never had any problems, the service and food is always excellent, the staff are friendly and polite. It can get busy sometimes in the evenings though (as do all restaurants at Freeport) so book in advance if you dont want to wait around.
