The Haywain is a small elegant fine dining restaurant serving modern cuisine, located In East Bergholt just outside Colchester.

The Haywain is situated in the village East Bergholt near Flatford just off the A12 between Colchester & Ipswich.Menus change regularly but dishes vary from Thyme Roasted Quail with Griddled Portobello Mushroom and Honey - Cinnamon Syrup to Caramelised Line Caught Cod with Roasted Baby Courgettes and Cockle Chowder. The Haywain use locally sourced produce wherever possible and is non-smoking.

My party (of 2) were the only party dinning that evening and the table settings and surroundings were perfect. Shiny cutlery and glassware, amazing table decorations and perfect background music.

We were given our own dining room, and I was even given the vegetarian menu (specified at booking - but not requested). The wine was delightfully chilled and the food cooked to perfection. We were looked after and given the attention we needed (not overbearing but highly attentive).

It will most certainly become a special little place in our hearts for those romantic and special evenings. An absolutely wonderfully quaint place to visit for a special evening.

Food of a quality that would compete anywhere but is probably the best we've found in Suffolk or Essex. Sensibly priced given the quality of the ingredients and undoubted effort in cooking and presenting them. It's definitely too small to generate a great atmosphere but the service is warm and discrete - best you could hope for at this tiny scale.

Overall a very enjoyable experience.

I have eaten round the world. Whoever is in this kitchen is a master. Elegant serene surroundings and fine, good value food just about sums things up without resorting to boring superlatives.

A really lovely place for a special meal. amy and craig are wonderful hosts and have created a really elegant and warm restaurant. really love it.
